How to decorate your rental home – The Ultimate Checklist You Need

Decorate Rental Home

It’s normal to feel out of place when you shift to somewhere new, especially when you know it’s temporary. Shifting in and out of rentals can be quite taxing on your emotions as you never get to settle down and design the space in your way so that it feels like home. However, it is still a place you live in and you have all the right to be comfortable in there. You can décor the rental space keeping few things in mind and avoiding certain things.

To make this interior designing process easier for you, here is a list of dos and don’ts.

Dos

You have all the right to feel at home, even if it is a rental space. So do not hesitate while decorating the space. What you need is a plan and few tricks up your sleeves to do the decoration with tact. Here are some of the dos that can help you with your designing.

  • Invest in small and movable furniture:- Buying ultra-luxurious furniture that needs high maintenance doesn’t make sense right now. Instead, decorate your rental space with furniture that’s compact, light, and fashionable. Who says you can’t express your taste through little changes and updates? It is not always necessary to go all out. Buy an armchair with a colour pop if you have white walls, choose a stylish side table to keep your books or buy a select a sleek loft unit that can accommodate your belongings and also make your living room look chic.

  • Get your green game on:- Go with the recent trend and decorate your space with indoor plants. They are the most affordable option for covering up empty spaces or corners. The greenery adds colour to your space and gives it a lively and refreshing vibe. Plants get along with light and colourful décor and can help you make your place look warm and homey. Choose different plants so that differences in sizes can give a structural edge to your home décor.

  • Opt for colourful rugs and cushions:- If you just want to touch up your already beautiful décor, then go with something small like changing your cushions. With numerous colours, textures, and prints, cushions have become quite popular in the décor industry. It’s because even a small change like this adds to the detailing in your décor. You can even change your living room rug to elevate the look of your room. Rugs have a distinct ability to set a cozy and comfy vibe around the house.

  • Get creative with your choices:- You do not need an expert’s advice to decorate your sweet little place. Use your imagination and trust your creativity. Interior decorating is mainly about what you would like to be surrounded with, and that nobody knows better than you. So get that green vase or that black side table even if nobody likes it or is not in trend. Buy different kinds of lights, curtains, hangings etc., and design your home the way you like. The best part is, when you move out, you can just pack all of it inside a box.

Don’ts

While designing, sometimes we can go overboard and it might lead us in trouble. There are certain things you need to take care of when you design a rental space. Here are some don’ts that you need to avoid.

  • Don’t overdo it:- It is okay to make the choices you regret later, it’s part of life. However, making decisions without considering any related factors is too big a risk. You might want to hold your imagination and remind yourself that after all, it’s a rented place. Overdoing your décor would lead to a waste of money, time and effort. Plus you will be frustrated and disheartened when you will move out. So it is better to keep things easy and breezy.

  • No screws and bolts:- As it is a rented place, it may come with some restrictions and not all your décor wishes can be fulfilled. Check-in with your landlord and ask whether you can make certain changes in the apartment as you like. Mostly, rented places do not allow the use of screws or bolts, so you might want to ignore decors like hanging lights, posters, or paintings. Avoid drilling and breaking into things and instead, go for things that you can easily take with you when you move out.

  • Don’t go over your budget:- Shopping is addictive, especially when you are on a spree to buy things to decorate your home. One thing leads to another and suddenly you end up with 10 things you didn’t even need. It is important to practice self-control, make a list of things you need/like to have, and stick to it. Keep in mind that you are decorating a rental space and that some of these things may not add up well when you go find a new home.

  • Don’t make major renovations:- Major renovations cost a lot and also make you attached to the place. In the end, you will have a hard time letting the place go and the worst part would be you won’t even get to take these renovations with you. Do not indulge in long term planning and try to change the colour of the walls or change the kitchen cabinets. If there is really a necessity for it, then first talk to your landlord about it and gain his/her confidence.

Summing it up

Decorating a rental space can be tricky but you can make this process easy and quite interesting if you set some rules to it. Online shopping sites can help you a lot in selecting trendy furniture and accessories that can make your home a place that’s meant for you.
