Confused between king and Queen sized beds? Read this

King or Queen Size Bed

Though the names may seem obvious, the uses for a king-sized and queen-sized bed differ. Many make the mistake of not choosing the right type of bed- they get carried away by the design, style, and size of the bed they see in glitzy showrooms. Here’s a guide to help you choose the right bed type based on your requirements.

Difference between a king and queen-sized bed

  • Dimensions-Though King and Queen-sized beds are the same in length, it's the breadth that differs. Queen-sized beds are 16 inches narrower than king-sized beds. When it comes to the area per person, a king-sized bed provides you an area of 38 inches by 80 inches while a queen-sized bed gives a per-person area of 30 inches by 80 inches.

  • Price- The price of your bed depends on various factors, though a king-sized bed may have more costs associated with it. Generally, what is considered is the type of materials used, the amount of customization done, the storage needed, and so on.

  • Accessories- Based on your requirements, there are various accessories you can add to your bed. These include customized headboards, mattresses, increased storage space, and so on. Most offline and online furniture retailers provide a plethora of accessories with each bed sold. You need not worry when it comes to getting the right accessories with your bed. However, your accessories need to fulfill your requirements, don’t just buy any bed accessory that you find attractive. You got to ensure it fulfills your demand. The prices of king-size bed accessories may be on the higher side as against queen-size beds.

Which bed to choose from?

Choosing the right type of bed depends on various factors. Let’s discuss some of them.

  • Comfort- The 16 inches of additional space provided by king beds are ideal for couples who sleep with their pets or kids. Queen-sized beds are generally ideal for smaller rooms or beds exclusively for couples or single people.  However, it does not make sense to have a king-sized bed if you sleep alone. This can be a waste of resources. Also, couples who sleep with kids can use a queen-sized bed in case of space constraints.

  • Your sleeping position and weight- If one or both of you are on the heavier side or are well built, you got to consider that when buying a bed. Those who sleep on their stomachs rather than their backs require more space around them. If you relate to this, a king-sized bed is what you are looking for.

  • Bedroom Size- The size of your bedroom decides whether you can buy a king-sized or queen-sized bed. As a rule of thumb, there should be at least 2 feet of free space from all 3 sides of the room. If you buy a bed that doesn’t leave this space, you will be left with a cramped room(in case of a king-sized bed placed in a small room) or excess space (in case of a queen-size bed in a big room with enough room for a king-size bed). You also need to factor in the other furniture you'll need- wardrobes, dressing tables, chairs, etc. One general rule to follow- If your room is smaller than 12x14 ft, you cannot use a king-sized bed.

  • Easy transportation- A queen bed can be transported in any truck or cargo vans without any hassle. Moving it through tight corners and staircases is relatively easy. On the other hand, moving a wider King size bed can be quite challenging. For those who move frequently, a queen size bed is what you need.

Why choose a Queen sized bed?

That depends on personal preferences and room dimensions. Sometimes, you have no option but to use a Queen sized bed if the dimensions of the room aren’t ideal for a king-sized bed. If it is just the two of you or you need to furnish a non-master bedroom, a queen-sized bed is your best option.

When to choose a King Sized bed?

Specifically designed for couples, it makes no sense to buy a king-sized bed if you sleep alone. These beds are perfect for couples who get extra room to sleep comfortably. Also, kids and pets can co-sleep with you in these beds.

If you regularly complain about your partner's sleeping habits, a king-sized bed is what you need.

A few last words...

Now that we know the fundamental differences between King size and Queen-size beds, making an informed decision is simple. Novice buyers sometimes get carried away by the looks, feels, and designs of Types of Beds at furniture retailers.

As a rule of thumb, if you are buying a bed as the first step in (re)furnishing your bedroom, you need to select the colour combinations, designs, and other elements that ‘blend’ with the design of the envisioned room.

Do double-check the quality of the raw materials used for the bed- after all this is a one-time investment that will be with you forever. If you can, or if making a decision seems challenging, a consultation with an experienced interior designer will help.
